Julia Roberts Was Suggested To Play Harriet Tubman By Studio Exec
Now #AListers, this is by far one of the most ridiculous headlines I’ve seen in my lifetime, and further supports the notion that “we” tend to rewrite history any way we see fit.
Harriet, the historical drama based on born slave and American abolitionist #HarrietTubman’s life would’ve been played by none other than #JuliaRoberts (yes people, THAT Julia Roberts) had it been left up to one studio exec to see things through.
The film’s screenwriter and producer, Gregory Allen Howard, says when he first started working on the movie in 1994 that one studio executive suggested the #PrettyWoman starlet portray the legendary slave turned abolitionist because Harriet’s story was “so long ago. No one is going to know the difference.'”
Thankfully, for everyone involved, Roberts was not cast as Tubman and instead the part was given to breakout actress #CynthiaErivo.
Howard credits the success of “12 Years A Slave” and the smash hit of “Black Panther” as reasons “Harriet” was green lighted to come through the door.
And I was rolling my eyes writing this entire story. ✌🏾🚶🏾♀️
